A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

SINCE 1887

Queens Sport and Fitness Club in Halifax has a rich and storied history that spans over a century, establishing itself as one of the region’s premier sporting venues. Founded in 1887, the club has long been a centre for tennis and other racquet sports, fostering a deep sense of community and a tradition of sporting excellence.

Throughout the years, Queens has grown from its humble beginnings into a vibrant hub for both recreational players and competitive athletes. The club has been home to numerous local, regional, and national champions, and it continues to uphold its legacy of excellence with state-of-the-art facilities and world-class coaching.

Queens Sports Club is more than just a place to play – it’s a place where friendships are formed, skills are honed, and sportsmanship is celebrated. As the club moves forward, it remains committed to preserving its rich heritage while embracing innovation and growth, ensuring that future generations can experience the same sense of pride and belonging that members have enjoyed since 1887.

EARLY HISTORY

THE BEGINNING

Queens Sports Club was first located at the top of Parkinson Lane but soon moved to its present grounds at Moorlands View, leased from Mrs Waterhouse. The club quickly became a social hub, and thanks to the dedication of members like Mr Harry Whiteley, who later became Speaker of the House of Commons, it weathered the challenges of the Great War.

Following the war, the club transitioned from a purely social entity to a competitive sporting organisation, attracting new members and fostering a vibrant community spirit. By 1925, Queens became affiliated with the Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association, marking its status as a regional sporting leader.
